How to Transition into New Arch Supports Comfortably and Stopping the Squeak
Posted by Chris Bentvelzen on
At SHOES-n-FEET, we want your transition into new arch supports to feel smooth, comfortable, and successful. Whether you’re wearing insoles for the first time or upgrading to a new pair, breaking them in the right way can make a huge difference in how your feet feel. Here are a few things to think about when wearing your insoles for the first time.
Break In – We recommend that with any new arch supports/orthotics you break them in to insure the best results. Our process is:
Day 1 – 1-2 hours
Day 2 – 2-4 hours
Day 3 – 3-6 hours
Day 4 – 4-8 hours
Day 5 – all day
The muscles in our feet need to get used to the new alignment and this can be a shock to them.
Common Issues - Sore arches and calves. If this happens take the arch supports out and go at a slower pace in the break in process. It can take individuals up to 2 weeks to feel comfortable.
Trimming/Fitting into Shoes - Take the original insole out of the shoe and replace with new arch support. All insoles are meant to be trim to fit. The best way to do this is to take the insole out of your shoe lay it on top of the arch support and trace with a pen. Cut on the outside of the line (closet to the top or ends of the toe) better to cut 2 times than 1 time too much.
Squeaking - This is a common issue with arch supports, due to the smooth plastic piece of the arch support rubbing in the shoe. Here are some ways to resolve the issue:
1. Take Sandpaper and rough up the sides of the insole and the entire plastic piece
2. Wrap the sides and bottom with medial tape
3. Place a Dryer sheet on the bottom of the shoe
4. Baby powder
