Why Do Foot Injuries Increase In The Summer?

Posted by Chris Bentvelzen on

As the weather improves and summer activities ramp up, many people notice something else increasing too — foot pain and injuries. Every year during the warmer months, we see more cases of heel pain, arch discomfort, tendonitis, stress injuries, and sore feet. But why does this happen?

The answer is simple: summer changes how active we are and what we wear on our feet.

People spend more time walking, traveling, exercising, hiking, playing sports, and simply being outdoors. The problem is that our feet and lower legs are not always prepared for the sudden increase in activity. Add in worn-out shoes, flip-flops, unsupportive sandals, and harder outdoor surfaces, and it creates the perfect recipe for injury.

Some of the biggest reasons foot injuries increase during the summer include:

  • Increased activity levels – More walking, running, vacations, sports, and outdoor activities place added stress on the feet and lower body.
  • Worn-out footwear – Many people pull out old running shoes or sandals that have lost cushioning and support.
  • Flip-flops and unsupportive sandals – Flat sandals can increase strain on the arches, plantar fascia, and Achilles tendon.
  • Sudden training increases – Going from low activity to long walks, races, or summer workouts too quickly often leads to overuse injuries.
  • Heat and swelling – Feet naturally swell more in warm weather, creating pressure points and discomfort if shoes do not fit properly.
  • Barefoot activities – Walking barefoot at pools, beaches, or around the house can increase stress on the feet and risk of injury.

Common summer foot injuries include:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Stress fractures
  • Shin splints
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Blisters
  • Ankle sprains

The good news is many of these injuries are preventable. Replacing worn shoes, wearing supportive footwear, gradually increasing activity levels, and making sure shoes fit properly can make a huge difference.

If your feet are already starting to hurt, do not wait for the pain to get worse. Often, the right footwear and proper support can help you stay active and comfortable all summer long.
